When I moved here in 1987, Nashville had two daily newspapers: a morning paper, The Tennessean, whose editorial page leaned left; and an evening paper, the Nashville Banner, whose editorial page leaned right. I recall with fondness that venerable newspaper, no matter that its editorial page did not align with my own politics. Today less than a dozen U.S. cities have two competing daily newspapers, and many communities have no local news source at all. It’s hard to conceive of a local newspaper, in print or online, that’s fully staffed and fully funded anymore. Gannett, the largest newspaper chain in the country, owns the daily newspaper in three of the four largest Tennessee cities, including The Tennessean in Nashville.

But tucked away securely in a string-wrapped envelope was a stack of love letters my grandfather wrote to her when they were dating. These treasured notes from the 1920s were fragile and falling apart — and a time capsule of what dating was like 100 years ago. I know how it ended — my grandparents sitting at their Formica kitchen table, watching the hummingbirds and sharing the daily newspaper — but what a gift to see how it began. I saved notes my husband wrote me when we were dating, but my kids and their friends don't communicate this way anymore. Love letters, written in cursive and sealed with a kiss, may truly be a relic of the past.

A newspaper columnist was accused of being “deceitful.” A lawyer and political activist was challenged to show her face at the funeral of a fallen officer. And a city councilwoman became the target of an apparent “vote her out” campaign. The combative comments — all posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter — were nothing new for a site that has become synonymous with personal attacks and insults. What was unusual was the source: executives from the New York Police Department. “The defund crowd who will cry ‘boo hoo’ to 9-1-1 when they need us,” John Chell, the chief of patrol, wrote on X on March 31, complaining about a critical column written by Harry Siegel of The Daily News.

Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday that hundreds of National Guard soldiers would be deployed to patrol the New York City subway system and check riders’ bags, her office made an adjustment: Soldiers searching bags would not carry long guns. The change, which was first reported by The Daily News, was ordered by Ms. Hochul on Wednesday for implementation on Thursday, according to a spokesman for the governor. Ms. Hochul issued a directive that National Guard members would be prohibited from carrying long guns at bag-check stations, he said. Soldiers not working at the stations would presumably be allowed to carry them. “It will, unfortunately, create a perfect storm for tension, escalation and further criminalization of Black and brown New Yorkers.”

Palo Alto Networks , Eli Lilly , and Eaton rallied hard over the past 12 months — up 127%, 117% and 66%, respectively. This $315 level is also close to the 50-day simple moving average (red line). Eli Lilly Two potential entry points: $617 (the 50-day simple moving average) and $541 (the 200-day simple moving average) The 50-day simple moving average is $617, a roughly 16.5% pullback from current levels, while the 200-day simple moving average is $541, a 27% decline. Instead, keep a close eye on that 50-day moving average, looking for that gap between the moving average and the stock price to narrow. As we can see, $242 represents the current 50-day moving average, with $240 representing a level of resistance shares recently surpassed.

Trump is misleading people about his past support for Republican Sen. James Lankford. Trump endorsed Lankford in 2022, but he's trying to distance himself from him now. Lankford was the lead Republican negotiator for a bipartisan immigration-Ukraine deal that Trump loathes. AdvertisementFormer President Donald Trump took aim at Republican Sen. NEW YORK (AP) — Journalists at The New York Daily News and Forbes walked off the job Thursday amid contentious contract talks with management and a difficult few weeks in the news industry. The one-day strike at the Daily News coincides with Forbes walkout, which runs through Monday. The labor union's actions come at a tumultuous time for media outlets, an increasing number of which are owned by billionaires. This week, Time magazine and Condé Nast, the publisher of Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ and other marquee magazines, both announced significant job cuts. Forbes spokesperson Laura Brusca said the company is “working diligently” to reach a contract with the union.

Journalists at The New York Daily News walked off the job on Thursday for the first time in more than three decades. Newsroom workers at The Daily News Union, which formed in 2021, are in negotiations for their first contract. The union called a one-day work stoppage to protest staffing cuts, as well as a new policy that requires workers to get advance approval for overtime. The Daily News, founded in 1919, was once a formidable city tabloid that raced for scoops against its rival, The New York Post, and was one of the largest newspapers in the country by circulation. But in recent years, the paper has been hollowed out by ownership changes and staffing cuts as it struggled against ever-declining circulation and dwindling revenue.

Howard Weaver, a self-described “poor kid from a shabby neighborhood,” was 24 years old and terrified when he was assigned by the floundering Anchorage Daily News to expose a rapacious chapter of the Teamsters union that was corruptly profiting from Alaska’s oil pipeline boom. “Any way you sliced it,” he recalled, “the odds were against us, a mismatch of Goliathian proportions.”But Mr. Weaver was hungry. Hungry enough that after months of investigative reporting, he and his colleagues exposed “a complex maze of political, economic and social power,” which, they wrote, “challenges at times both mighty industry and state government itself.”Three weeks before The Daily News declared that it was on the brink of bankruptcy, the scrappy newspaper with a circulation of about 13,000 was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for public service in 1976 for its reporting on Teamsters Local 959. It was the smallest paper and the first in Alaska to win the coveted medal.

The plan in Paris would have cost €45 million, said a spokesman for the 2024 organizing committee. Visitors and tourists alike may still get at least one deal by buying the Paris 2024 pass, part of the proposed fare changes. That pass will cost €16 a day for unlimited rides in all five transit zones, down from €20.10 for an all-zone day pass, though a seven-day Paris 2024 pass will still be much more expensive than the current offering. Some of the Olympic events take place at venues in the suburbs, which are outside the main Metro zone. The Paris 2024 unlimited pass also includes trips to both airports.

But are Israel’s actions — as the nation’s opponents argue — verging on ethnic cleansing or, most explosively, genocide? That means two important things: First, we need to define what it is that we are seeing, and second, we have the chance to stop the situation before it gets worse. That’s well over five times as many people as the more than 1,400 people in Israel murdered by Hamas. War crimes are defined in the 1949 Geneva Conventions and subsequent protocols as serious violations of the laws and customs of war in international armed conflict against both combatants and civilians. There is still time to stop Israel from letting its actions become a genocide.

By James MackenzieJERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu built his reputation as a security hawk on the back of his service in an elite special forces unit that carried out some of Israel's most daring hostage rescues. The scale of the killing, accounts of trauma and images of the violence that emerged from the southern Israeli communities around Gaza have shaken the country. In his sixth term as prime minister, Netanyahu, 74, heads one of Israel's most extreme right-wing coalitions and has come under increasing pressure as the initial shock has given way to fury at the failures that allowed the attack to take place. "We have seen too many cycles in the past where pressure forced the government not to complete the mission and to leave Hamas in power," he said. "He is a man who is unfit to serve as prime minister," an editorialist in Yedioth Ahronoth, Israel's biggest selling newspaper, wrote this week, adding that Netanyahu should have resigned or been removed immediately after the Oct. 7 attack.

Fullerton, Wilson and two other officers were charged in connection with 18-year-old Nicholas Feliciano's suicide attempt at the Rikers Island jail complex on Nov. 27, 2019. Prosecutors said jail guards were seen on surveillance video walking past Feliciano and taking no action for seven minutes and 51 seconds. An investigation report by the city Board of Correction later found that the officers believed Feliciano was faking a suicide attempt. David Rankin, a lawyer for Feliciano's family, said they are “gratified” that the two guards took responsibility in pleading guilty. The Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association has called the officers' indictments politically motivated and called on prosecutors to charge inmates who assault guards.

There are two pivotal events that seem to have ignited the new era of solidarity between some young American activists and the people of Palestine. The first came in the form of Palestinian activists expressing support on social media for the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Mo., which activists describe as an uprising, not just a series of protests. Around that time, a small delegation of Palestinians even traveled to Ferguson and St. Louis to meet with American activists. It called back to a time when an American figure as notable as Malcolm X spoke out for the Palestinian cause. Even activists who didn’t make these journeys describe coming to this cause in part through personal connections with Palestinians and Palestinian Americans.

The paprika made me think of the terrific food writer Arthur Schwartz, who was once the restaurant critic for The Daily News and later became known as the Food Maven. Arthur and I got to talking about the spice when I interviewed him for a story about chicken paprikash. I’d asserted that most paprika languishes in spice drawers, and is stale and flavorless as a result. To make a proper paprikash or goulash, I said, the smart move is to purchase some new paprika, bright and flavorful. Lidey’s recipe delivers!

Viewers saw the most visible change on Monday when CNN updated the network’s on-screen banners that Licht had implemented in the final days before his departure. While the former network chief sought to tone down the volume, the emerging iteration of CNN is reporting the news in a bolder, unbridled way. To be clear, CNN has not reverted entirely back to the style of journalism that it practiced under former network chief Jeff Zucker.
